will present a lecture on Oyabe Zen'ichiro, a Japanese student who studied in the
United States in the 1890s. She will explore the meaning of cultural identity.

Dr. Lawrence Eng, online community manager for ServiceNow, will be speaking on "The
Evolution of Otaku Culture, from Japan to America and Beyond". Otaku, meaning "super-fan",
is most evident among fans of Japanese animation (anime) and comics (manga). Otaku
culture has transcended national identities, and has become a significant subcultural
strategy for living in our increasingly postmodern and globalized world. This event
is part of the International Forum Series and is a First Year Experience event.

will speak on "If These Bones Could Talk; Researching Your Family Genealogy".

Speaker: Isabel Wilkerson will present a talk on her Pulitzer-prize winning book "The
Warmth of Other Suns". The book is about the migration of African-Americans from
the South to the North from 1915-1970, telling the stories of both "average" folks
and the famous (such as Jessie Owens). The talk will be followed by a book signing.
Her book will be available for purchase.

Speaker: Dr. Laurence Michalak on "Tunisia and the Arab Spring".
Dr. Michalak is a cultural anthropologist and former director of Center for Maghrib
Studies in Tunis (CEMAT) as well as former vice chair of the Center for Middle Eastern
Studies at the University of California, Berkeley. He is the author of “Tunisia: Igniting
Arab Democracy” for inclusion in A Diplomat’s Handbook for Democracy Development Support
(3rd edition). He is one of the top American experts on these topics.
