April 14th: Congratulations to Jie Zhou for being admitted at University of Michigan which ranks 5th in Mechanical Engineering in the US. MET department is proud of Ms Zhou and wishes her all the best!
Sadly, Professor Glenn Allen passed away on April 3rd, 2012. He passed away after a battle with cancer. He was the founding director of the Mechatronics Engineering program, one of the original faculty members in the School of Engineering Technology and Management and also SPSU’s 2010-11 Teacher of the Year.
MET faculty would like to express their heartfelt condolences to Glenn's family and friends. He was an asset for our department and inspired so many faculty and students. Glenn's memorial service was held on Thursday, April 12, 2012. Many students and faculty attended the service. Prof. Gene Yon wrote about Prof Allen:
"ISA member, Professor R. Glenn Allen, passed away 3 April. Allen launched Mechatronics at Southern Polytechnic State University (SPSU) as a recognized four-year BS degree academic discipline. SPSU is the second U.S. university granting this degree and the first in the Southeast region. He established strong industry linkages and financial support for SPSU and Mechatronics and established a strong working base in the K-12 domain with students, teachers, and administrators that focused upon motivating students to pursue higher education. Allen also launched Georgia BEST Robotics and grew that base to over 1,500 students and parents and created a leadership role model for SPSU students, faculty, and associates. All this was accomplished while he maintained a respectful devotion to creating and growing a professional environment for students of all ages. He was the teacher and problem solver that I continue to aspire to become".
Christopher Cutter, a senior in mechanical engineering technology (MET), was elected as the Engineering Technology Student of the Year. Read more.
