Southern Polytechnic State University has long been known for its Mechanical Engineering Technology graduates. Industry advisors note that Mechanical Engineering Technology students are able to hit the ground running. They have Industry specific skills that meet their immediate needs. Computer Numerical Control (CNC) and Computer Aided Design (CAD) are two of the skill sets highly valued from the Mechanical Engineering Technology graduates. In many cases students within the Mechanical Engineering Technology program will have jobs in their field performing engineering work prior to actually graduating.
There are several majors at Southern Polytechnic State University who do not have CNC or CAD within their curriculum. If CNC or CAD is within their curriculum it may just be a first level introductory course. Students outside of Mechanical Engineering Technology would benefit from a minor in Manufacturing Engineering Technology and Engineering Design Graphics Technology by gaining industry specific skills that are immediately and directly relevant to employers.Minor in Manufacturing Engineering Technology:
Students in Mechanical Engineering, Mechatronics Engineering, Industrial Engineering Technology, Electrical & Computer Engineering Technology, etc have expressed specific interest in obtaining experience through course work in the Manufacturing Engineering Technology courses listed. Any number of other majors may add value to their education by obtaining skills that are directly and immediately relevant to employers.
Faculty expertise is currently in place to teach courses in Manufacturing Engineering Technology. Facilities, including classrooms and labs are available. Adding a minor in Manufacturing Engineering Technology would increase the utilization of existing Engineering Graphics and Machining Labs in the new Engineering Technology Building.
