FOR STUDENTS

If your a returning Student alumni, Welcome Back!

We're glad you are once again taking on the exciting challenge of the Future City Competition. We know you learned a lot about everything that goes into designing, planning and maintaining a city.  And to think you did it all while having fun being creative and using your imagination. Congratulations on all that you accomplished.

If your a new Student, we're glad you decided to join the team!

Future City is a fun and challenging project, that lets you and your teammates explore your imagination and create something on your own. We know designing a city may seem like a lot of work, but with your Teacher and Mentor helping to break down the parts we know you'll have fun

When you compete in Future City you'll be learning about city planning, design, and different types of engineering. You'll also learn how to work in teams, play SimCity, build models, write a research essay and make a formal presentation.

So lets get started!

The link below is to video that can give you an about what competing in Future City is all about.

You can also check out TFK Kid Reporter Claire Duncan as she interviews student engineers at the 2012 Future City Competition.

COMPETING IN FUTURE CITY

The first thing to know is that Future City is a team sport and every team member plays an important role.

  • Students generate the ideas, plan their execution, research, write, build, learn, laugh, and present their final product.
  • Teachers organize the team(s), facilitate the learning, and guide the students through their project(s).
  • Mentors serve as team advisors, share their engineering expertise, and help students develop skills like project management and systems thinking skills.

There are five components to the Future City Competition. Your team will be judged and scored on each one separately and you can earn up to 400 points on your design. They are:

  1. Research Essay
  2. City Narrative
  3. Virtual City Design
  4. Physical Model
  5. Team Presentation

You will turn in your Virtual City Design, Research Essay, and City Narrative in December before the Regional Competitions. You'll present your physical Model and deliver your Team Presentation in January at the Regional Competition before several panels of judges.

At Regionals, scores from all five components will be added together to determine the top team.

 AWARDS AND PRIZES

When you present your Future City design to the judges your team will be competing for Awards and Prizes. There are lots of Awards, and the top 5 overall teams compete for cash prizes.

The 1st place team from Georgia gets a free trip to Washington, DC. to compete in Nationals with kids from all over the country.

The winners at Nationals get a free trip to Space Camp in Huntsville Alabama where they can train like an Astronaut.

You can check out the winners from 2011and hear all about their design, see parts of their presentation and thier trip to Space Camp below.
