The Faculty Senate has "legislative responsibility for all academic matters," according to the SPSU Statutes. In our policies and procedures, it is noted further that actions of the Senate "are subject to approval by the faculty through majority vote during General Faculty meetings. Legislation passed by the Senate and General Faculty must receive final approval by the university President in order to become university policy."
According to its by-laws, the Senate is,
To provide the means to share responsibility among members of the Faculty and Administration for the University’s direction and policy-making;
To represent the Faculty in all matters relating to academic policy, opportunities, responsibilities and other matters affecting the general welfare of the Faculty and other stakeholders;
To provide a representative forum for the deliberate consideration of proposals, recommendations, suggestions, and institutional positions, and to make appropriate recommendations to the Faculty; and
To serve as an advisory council to the President of the University.
