Apply to the Graduate Certificate in Technical Communication program

We admit new students for the Fall and Spring semesters only.

Your application materials are due for consideration by these dates:

  • July 1 for Fall Semester (begins mid-August)
  • November 1 for Spring Semester (begins early January)

Students applying to the Graduate Certificate program must have:

  • Undergraduate degree from an accredited institution
  • GPA at or above the university’s 2.75 minimum

Before starting the application process: Please contact Ms. Donna McPherson at dmcphers@spsu.edu and provide her with your name, email, and degree/certificate selection. Ms. McPherson will help you with the process and follow-up on your application. 

To complete the application process with the Graduate School, students must submit the following to Graduate Admissions:

  • completed application form. You apply online through the Graduate School's application center.
  • application fee of $50. This is non-refundable and payable online.
  • transcripts. One official sealed transcript sent directly from each college attended.
  • immunization certification. Please print and sign the waiver on the back stating enrollment in online courses only.
  • statement of purpose essay. See the Graduate School's information on the statement of purpose essay.
  • professional resume. This resume details current and previous work experience

To complete the application process with the department, students must write an essay. This essay is timed; topics are provided by the department.

  • Contact the Program Assistant, Donna McPherson, tcom@spsu.edu, or 678-915-7202, to schedule a day and time to write the essay.

    The essay topic and instructions will be sent via email, on the day scheduled. The applicant is responsible for timing the essay and sending an electronic copy back to the department within two hours of beginning the essay.

NOTE: students who do not have a background in writing and/or graphics may be given provisional admission status and required to take IDC 5001 and/or IDC 5002 as preparation for the degree program. A grade of B or above is required for full admission into the degree program. Students may also self-select for either or both of IDC 5001 and 5002.

Additional Requirements for International Students

Applicants whose native language is not English must submit minimum official TOEFL scores of a total of 213 computer-based, 79 internet-based, and 6.5 IELTS, to the Graduate Admissions Office.

You must be able to document that your degree is equivalent to a four year bachelor's degree awarded by an accredited United States college or university.

If you need a student visa (F-1 or J-1), you must complete a Financial Affidavit pdf icon. The Financial Affidavit must show ability to meet the financial obligations of tuition, fees, and living expenses before an I-20 or acceptance letter will be issued. Current (less than one year old) letters of financial support must accompany the Financial Affidavit.

If you are applying from outside the United States, you must submit all admissions documents, including immunization certificates, at least 60 days prior to the above-stated deadlines.

Note: Southern Polytechnic State University reserves the right to require applicants to send their international educational credentials to an approved SPSU professional evaluation service before being considered for admission. For additional information visit International Graduate Students.

Admission Decisions

The Graduate Review Committee, made up of department faculty, will evaluate your application materials packet. They will assess your submission carefully and determine your suitability for admission to your program of choice.

The committee meets immediately after the application deadline passes. Because admission decisions need to be made quickly, they will only consider completed applications. The Graduate Review Committee reserves the right to accept or reject any application.

You'll be notified in writing once a decision is made on your application.
