Overview

Civil engineering is the oldest of the engineering disciplines and involves the planning, design, and construction of facilities essential to modern life.

Graduates can look forward to employment by construction companies; city and county engineering departments; state and federal transportation organizations (such as the Georgia Department of Transportation); and civil engineering consulting and design firms. Graduates have the qualifications to enter careers in areas such as, but not limited to, transportation engineering, structural engineering, environmental engineering, geotechnical engineering, water resource engineering, and construction engineering. Typical job titles for graduates may include construction engineer, project engineer, planner, project supervisor, consulting engineer, and design engineer.

Civil Engineering requires rigorous training in basic engineering principles along with the development of skills in the areas of planning and management of construction projects and the associated systems and resources. Graduates in the area of Civil Engineering will be required to master technical elements and to demonstrate particular competence in the areas of communication, fiscal management, and project control. The broad-based background is tailored to develop professionals who will be able to move between the technical and managerial aspects of civil engineering projects and to serve in key leadership positions within the engineering profession.


Program Educational Objectives

Program Educational Objectives are broad statements that describe career and professional accomplishments that the program prepares graduates to achieve during the first few years following graduation. In practice graduates of the Civil Engineering Program will:  
  1. Meet the educational requirements to pursue registration as a professional engineer in the State of Georgia and other states in the nation.
  2. Demonstrate career advancement with increasing responsibility in civil engineering industry as owners, managers, lead engineers, or other key positions of leadership.
  3. Be capable of pursuing graduate education in civil engineering, construction engineering, and related fields.


Student Outcomes

Program Outcomes are statements that describe knowledge and skills acquired by students that complete the program and which prepare them to achieve the educational objectives. The program outcomes are demonstrated by students at or before graduation.
Students completing the civil engineering program will be able to:    

  1. Apply knowledge of mathematics, science, and engineering.
  2. Design and conduct experiments, as well as to analyze and interpret data.
  3. Design a system, component, or process to meet desired needs within realistic constraints such as economic, environmental, social, political, ethical, health and safety, manufacturability, and sustainability.
  4. Function on multidisciplinary teams.
  5. Identify, formulate, and solve engineering problems.
  6. Understand professional and ethical responsibility.
  7. Communicate effectively in written, oral, graphical, and mathematical formats appropriate to civil engineering.
  8. Understand the impact of engineering solutions in a global, economic, environmental, and societal context.
  9. Demonstrate recognition of the need for, and ability to, engage in life-long learning.
  10. Demonstrate knowledge of contemporary issues.
  11. Demonstrate an ability to use the techniques, skills, and modern engineering tools necessary for engineering practice.
  12. Apply knowledge of mathematics through differential equations, calculus-based physics, chemistry, and at least one additional area of basic science, consistent with the program educational objectives.
  13. Apply knowledge of four technical areas in Civil Engineering specialty field.
  14. Explain basic concept in management, business, public policy, and leadership.
  15. Explain the importance of professional license.

ABET Accreditation

The fall 2013 the SPSU School of Engineering was visited by external reviewers from the Accreditation Board for Engineering and Technology (ABET) for evaluation for initial accreditation of the engineering programs. The Civil Engineering program was part of this review by ABET.
 
“Simply put, accreditation is value. Reaching into our public, private, and professional lives, accreditation is proof that a collegiate program has met certain standards necessary to produce graduates who are ready to enter their professions. Students who graduate from accredited programs have access to enhanced opportunities in employment; licensure, registration and certification; graduate education and global mobility.”
 
Accreditation assures that engineering programs meet strict standards set by professional organizations (ASCE) and ABET. These standards serve to ensure adequate preparation for entry to the engineering profession, including employment and preparation for graduate school. In addition, most states (including Georgia) specify a degree from an ABET-accredited program as part of the standards for professional licensing.        
 
The accreditation process is rigorous and requires documentation of curriculum, university resources, program objectives and outcomes. The ABET team also evaluates student knowledge, skills, continuous improvement processes, curriculum content, faculty qualifications and facilities.
 
Self-study reports were written during the 2012-13 academic year and submitted for review during the summer of 2013. The ABET team visited SPSU November 2013 to conduct the site visit and to establish preliminary findings. During the visit, the team interviewed university leadership, faculty, staff from the School of Engineering, current students, alumni, and members of the CE Industrial Advisory Committee. They also toured classroom and laboratory facilities and evaluated course materials to verify the academic content of the CE program and to review the documented program outcomes. These outcomes range from a graduate’s ability to design systems, components and processes, to the ability to communicate effectively and function on multidisciplinary teams.
 
We are pleased to announce that the preliminary findings by the visiting team were very positive. The team noted a number of strengths including the quality of the faculty. It is not uncommon for reputable programs to receive weakness, concerns, and observations as part of the review process. The SPSU Civil Engineering program, however, received an entirely positive review without a single weakness, concern, or observation. (That is very unusual).
 
It is important to note that these finding are preliminary.
