A & S Department Chairs Meeting
November 8, 2007
Attendance: Alan Gabrielli, Andrew McMorran, Mark Nunes, Philip Patterson and Donna Zeigler
1. Departmental Updates
Department is developing a 2nd concentration under the BA in Media and Cultures. One of the priorities of the department is the promotion of the degree programs. Mark spoke at Osborne High School about the General Education Outcomes and was a little surprised that they were not familiar with these outcomes. Michele Shauf has turned in her letter of resignation, effective the end of spring semester 2008. They currently have 4 searches underway:
1. Tenure Track Position- Technical Communication / Information Architecture (Replacing Michele Shauf )
2. Tenure Track Position- English/ Professional Writing
3. Tenure Track Position- Media Arts
4. Lecturer Position- English
They have prepared the curriculum for the B.S. in Mathematics with a concentration in Education. SPSU has STEM money to fund a Help Center for Mathematics and Science students. On November 15, 2007 Mathematics will be hosting a colloquium, the speaker will be Jennifer Vandenbussche of the Univ. of Illinois in Urbana-Champaign.
On November 12, 2007 SPSU will be the site of the Polar Palooza presentation hosted by Fernbank Science Center, featuring tales of adventure and science told by a charismatic group of polar researchers and an Alaskan Native. Many BCP SP08 sections are already full. Phil has hired a new adjunct professor for Physics. The department is discussing de-linking labs from lecture sections. Phil will talk to Steve Hamrick about labs being listed as Co-Requisites for lectures. BCP is searching for a Lecturer in Physics and a Lab Technician in Biology.
2. 6 Sigma Training
Dave Caudill is looking for people to sit in on a dress rehearsal of the new 6 Sigma class. The dates will be December 4th, 5th, 6th. Participants who complete the training and pass the test will receive a certificate. There are 2 different levels of certification; White Belt- which is one day of training on the 4th and Yellow Belt- which is all 3 days of training. Alan needs to know by Thanksgiving if there is anyone interested in this training.
3. Open House
November 10, 2007 is Open House. We need handouts for all of the new programs. Alan wanted to make sure that all of the departments have coverage at the open house.
4. Spring 2008 Registration
Registration opened a few days ago and we are already up 5%. Keep an eye on the classes as far as caps are concerned. Plans are to strictly enforce policies for non-payment of fees. Students dropped for non payment will not be put back into classes.
5. New Business
Alan would like for all of the Department Chairs to meet with Jo Galle, the new Director of Assessment.
