Schedule of Events for the 2014 Military Appreciation Week

Monday, November 10
12:00 PM Flag Planting Ceremony

Join us at noon in the Sycamore Grove for the official opening of the 2014 Military Appreciation Week. Individuals will plant flags in "memory of" or "honor of" those they know that served. The 2014 Proclamation will be read and we will have a moment of silence for personal reflections. All are welcome to plant flags throughout the day.

Honor Flight -The Movie

Join us at the Strand Theatrem Marietta Square, to see our WWII veterans honored in Washington. Meet and get to know some individuals who served in WWII.

To reserve seats, email: Include name & number of seats. WWII vets get priority seating tickets. Tickets will be available in the sudent Life office, Student Center.

Meals Ready to Eat (MRE) "Cook Off"

Service members who have been in the field know about Meals Ready to Eat (MRE). Most who have experienced MREs over the last nine decades have altered the meal to make it more pallitable. Witness as SPSU students compete to make the best tasting lunch possible with 3 MREs to mix. The contestants will be judged and a "Best MRE Chef" will be selected.

Donna has served her community in many organizations including: Habitat for Humanity, American Red Cross, Diabetes Association, CASA (Abused Children), GA Regional Transportation Authority, Atlanta Regional Commission (Environmental Collaborative) , Fannie Mae (Executive Board), various schools’ PTSA, GA Vietnam Veterans Alliance (Director), GA Veitnam Business Assoc., Cobb County Republican Women’s Club (President 2003), Cobb Assoc. of REALTORS (President 1994), GA Assoc. of REALTORS and the National Assoc. of REALTORS. Donna was recently featured in “The Kathleen Story” segment of the World Film Festival’s award winning Vietnam War documentary film, In The Shadow of The Blade, which was released on Veterans Day and is continued to be seen on the “Military Channel” and the “Discovery Channel”. “The Kathleen Story” segment of this film has been selected by The Smithsonian Institute in Washington, D.C. to run during the permanent display on the Vietnam War in their American History Museum. Donna has been the Keynote speaker for many important events throughout the United States including the GEMA/FEMA Regional Conference, Lockheed Veterans Dinner and was a Program participant at the VIP Veterans Festivities at the Ronald Reagan Library in California.

Military Service:

  • Entered the US Army in 1964 through the Student Nurse Corps Program (ROTC)
  • Commissioned a 2nd Lt. in February 1966
  • Basic Training : Fort Sam Houston, Texas
  • Assignments:
    • Brooke Army Medical Center, Ft. Sam Houston, TX
    • Womack Army Hospital, Fort Bragg, N.C.
    • DeWitt Army Hospital, Fort Belvoir, VA with attachment to Walter Reed Army Hospital, Washington, D.C.
    • Veitnam: 3rd Field Hospital, Saigon (Head Nurse, Emergency Room/Triage Area), 1968-1969
  • Promoted to Captain June 1968
  • Decorations: Vietnam Service Ribbon and the Army Commendation Metal
  • Honorable Discharge June 1969

Honor Flight -The Movie

Honor Flight is a heartwarming documentary about four living World War II veterans and a Midwest community coming together to give them the trip of a lifetime. Volunteers race against the clock to fly thousands of WWII veterans to Washington, DC to see the memorial constructed for them in 2004, nearly 60 years after their epic struggle.
